Together we can! Thank you to everyone who has called my office and reported illegal dumping, littering, garbage not picked up, pot holes and graffiti. My staff and I are working very hard with City staff and residents to clean up Ward 17. Everyone wants a clean, neat and safe environment to live, work and play in. If you want a community clean up day for your neighbourhood, please call my office and we will help you to organize it. We have helped dozens of residents' groups initiate community clean-up days, and would be pleased to help you organize one as well." We will supply gloves and bags and arrange for a Solid Waste truck to pick up your collected materials. Community clean up days began in Ward 17 in 1994 and have become a popular program across the city. Please continue to call if you see graffiti or gang tags anywhere in the ward. Just call or email us with the location and we will get it cleaned up. Since the beginning of the new garbage bin program, there has been a huge amount of illegal dumping in our ward. Mattresses, furniture and garbage bags have been dumped in isolated locations. In December 2008 I organized the pick up of illegally dumped garbage on Union Street. Special thanks go to the members of the Turnberry Residents Association for working so hard to clean up their community. If you see garbage or furniture sitting where it does not belong, please call our office with the location and we will send a City crew to clean up the area. The new waste bin program has its own set of rules and residents continue to have problems getting their garbage and recycling picked up. Call my office as soon as you notice that you have not received pick up and my staff will call the Solid Waste supervisor immediately. Garbage collection is getting more complicated but you have a right to get your materials picked up. It is pot hole season and we need you to tell us where the holes are. Call us with a specific location and we will send a crew to fill the pot hole with asphalt until a permanent repair can be made. With spring on the way, it is a wonderful time to think of greening our neighbourhoods. It is time to think about planting a tree at your home (see Get a Free Tree on the back page) and time to plan your garden. This year I will be giving away tonnes of compost for your garden. The dates and places of the compost give away are included in this newsletter. On your behalf, I would like to thank the executive members of the Regal Heights Residents Association for their innovative plan to increase the number of trees in the Westmount to Winona section of St. Clair Avenue West. This plan will approximately double the number of trees originally scheduled to be planted here. Keep your calls coming. Your efforts are making the difference! |
